Pharmacy Lamps

Pharmacy lamps.  They are pretty hot right now.  Many of us either own one or have thought of owning one (or know someone who has thought of owning one...)  The electric pharmacy style lamps were first introduced in the 1890's.  They were an advantage over the previous gas lamps for task lighting in pharmacies, hospitals and other places where detail work was required.

Pharmacy style lamps have come a long way since then.  No longer a utilitarian piece only, today's lamps are full of style.  Found in numerous designs, colors and finishes to complement any decor.  Lamps run the gamut in size from small task lighting to full sized floor length and even wall mounted.

This oil rubbed bronze desk lamp works nicely in this office area.  (I'm really liking the sheet music wall treatment, too.  Especially with the exposed brick.)

The twin pharmacy lamps in this bedroom are a stylish way to direct light where needed.  (I really can't take my eyes off the headboard, though.  Do you think they would notice if it went missing?)

The silver toned bedside lamp really brings a beautiful element into the room.  (There are so many other interesting items in the space as well.)

So whether you prefer a single lamp for lighting (or to place a number of lamps in varying styles into a lighting sculpture), pharmacy lamps are a way to turn something functional into something fabulous.

  1. I love pharmacy lamps! I actually the silver version of the red one above (from Ikea). It's on my work desk. :)
