Chalkboard for Charity

This weekend our church is raising money for the Angelheart Children's Shelter by holding an auction.  Our congregation was encouraged to donate goods and services for the cause that could be auctioned off.  I've had a mirror sitting around for awhile now that I've been planning on turning into a chalkboard and thought it would be perfect for the auction.

This mirror was purchased at Goodwill about 5 months ago and I'm just now getting around to doing something with it.  I planned on spraying the glass with chalkboard paint and also painting the frame.  The first step was to begin taping off the frame.

You can see the lovely green color and that the frame is actually plastic.  (Even so, the mirror still weighs a ton.)

I was finally ready to paint.

These were the paint cans I used.  Krylon Calkboard, Awesome Kilz primer, and Krylon Caralina Mist.

In order to turn a mirror into a chalkboard you first need to remove the glass if you're going to.  I decided to keep the glass in for painting myself since the mirror was old (vintage!) and it looked as though I wasn't going to be able to take it apart so easily.  No worries, I just used a ton of tape instead.

After I finished taping I lightly sanded the glass surface with fine 220 grit sandpaper.  I wiped it down with a soft cloth and then gave the mirror four light coats of the chalkboard spray.

The next day I covered the chalkboard part and started addressing the ugly colored frame.  I primed it first with Kilz and then sprayed the color with Krylon spray paint.

And here is the final result.  I think it turned out quite well.  (Hopefully someone will bid on it.)

The chalkboard is long and narrow and might be cute as a menu bar or message board.
