Is Christmas Candy a Decoration?

For those great chocolate connoisseurs (or chocoholics), December has another reason to celebrate--Christmas candy.   It's probably one of the only months where candy can be considered a decoration.  And I've fallen under the candy makers sinister plot.  At no other time of the year would I consider decorating with a bowl filled with candy.  But throw some red and green wrappers into the mix while I'm out shopping (listening to Barry Manilow crooning the Christmas carols over the loud speaker) and I'm all for it.

Today I stopped by a Goodwill I haven't been to in awhile.  This particular store is always so crowded.  (I mean like Walmart with a sale on Black Friday crowded.)  Every single day.  I always end up abandoning my cart and darting down the aisles weaving in between the other shoppers looking for buried treasure.  My treasure today was a white ceramic owl container.  And my first thought was "that will make a cute candy dish."  (Actually, what I was really thinking was why the heck was the guy next to me standing so close?)

Anyway, I was really excited about the owl and brought it home with me.  The previous owner had apparently used the container for some sort of floral arrangement.

I removed the foam, cleaned it out and filled it with my newly purchased candy.  (The trick-- if you don't want to buy 10 pounds of candy to fill the whole thing-- is to fill the bottom of the container with crumpled up grocery bags and then just place the candy on top.)

I was probably a little more excited about this owl than I should have been as I devoted a whole photo shoot to it.  I tried posing it in my giant enamelware bowl but the pinecones kept rolling and I had trouble keeping the owl perfectly upright.

I then thought it would be fun to photograph the owl in a tree.  (Doesn't everyone put their candy dishes in trees?)  I had to wedge it between two branches and take the picture in the split second that I let go of the bird.  The owl teetered but luckily didn't fall.  The candy was preserved and I ended up with a photo I liked.  (I had a piece of candy to celebrate.)

Does anyone else use Christmas candy as a decoration?

  1. Yes, candy can be a decoration, I'm using candy cane and you can never go wrong with kisses!. The owl was a great find, they are so popular right now. What's old is new again, owls were really popular in the 70's. Have a great holiday. Laura

  4. I LOVE that owl! His eyes look like gerber daisies that is what I first noticed...his being white the second they are usually ugly shades of brown and orange! ...all around love!! Good tip about the candy too...I do that with my huge flower pots in the summer I stuff the bottom with my bottles and cans from the recycle bin to save on buying so much dirt!
