In the Land of Frames

I must admit I have a thing for frames. The more ornate, the better. If anything in my house would qualify me for being on an episode of Hoarders, that would be it. (Unless the 327 cats roaming around my house counted...) This mirror was found at the Salvation Army. It's very large, heavy and beautiful.

It has a place reserved in my daughter's room.

The same day I saw this giant frame at Goodwill. It was a little awkward carrying it throughout the store--I didn't dare set it down. It had a thin sheet of ribbed opaque plastic instead of glass. Strange.

I love the detail. Great plans are in store for this hefty frame.

This picture of the lovely hunting scene was shown in a previous post. I decided to transform it into (another) chalkboard since it had the perfect frame for it. The only thing that was a little strange was that instead of a glass insert, it was plastic.

Getting ready to prime and paint in my high-grade professional workshop. It makes it extra fun when I'm waiting for the paint to dry and have to keep picking out the bugs and leaves that adhere themselves to the painted surface. (Like I said, professional level all the way...)

Primed in Kilz spray primer. (Excellent coverage.)

I painted in Rust-Oleum Heirloom White. The frame really distressed nicely. I then started working with the chalkboard paint. I lightly sanded the surface of the plastic and then gave it a few coats of chalkboard spray paint.

Now, I've made many chalkboards from mirrors and picture frames. They all turn out perfectly. For some reason this did not. Notice how the surface looks so "splotchy?" I'm not sure what happened. (I blame the plastic!)

I actually kind of dig it. It's old timey.
