Wainscoting (part 1)

I absolutely love all kinds of moulding and trim in a home. I especially have an affinity for wainscoting which is paneling on the lower part of a wall. There are all different styles of wainscoting. Board and batten is very popular right now. There is also tongue and groove bead board as well as flat, inverted and raised panel. Different types for all decor styles.

The raised panel frames really appeal to me.

It just gives the room such a finished look.

I've been wanting to have wainscoting in our music room (dining room) ever since we moved in. I don't have any special wood cutting skills or power tools so that has been a drawback. Where we live in Texas it is almost standard to have textured walls. It makes it a real pain to do any sort of painting or applied decorative finishes. So, yes, I'll admit that I thought wainscoting would be far in the distant future.

That is until I ran across Emily's blog, DecorChick! Emily has been adding moulding and wainscoting to her home AND she has textured walls. She has a post explaining an easier way of adding wainscoting without the use of power tools. (My kind of project!)

I actually started to work on it the very next day. Lowes sells frame moulding in a few different sizes already put together and primed.

I measured beforehand to see how many and which sizes I needed. When I returned home I spaced them against the wall to get a better idea how it would look. I ended up moving some around and buying a few more.

I then just measured and attached with finishing nails.

So here is a during shot. I finished nailing them all up except for the two under the window. I like how it's looking so far.

I had to run back to the store for caulk. I applied it on all the inside and outside of each frame. It was a little messy! (I blame the textured walls.)

Now I just need to prime and paint. I'm so excited for it to be finished! (Stay tuned for part 2.)

Has anyone else had any experience with applying moulding to textured walls?

  2. oooh no experience with moulding and textured walls....but our kitchen has faux textured walls that I'm not looking forward to dealing with. Woo hoo for getting your wainscoting earlier than expected! It looks great! :)

Thank you for stopping by our blog and your super sweet comment about our updated bathroom. We also think it's funny that the "bird sanctuary" (lol at that, by the way) was someone's "after." :)
