Can You Paint Anything? (And should you?)

Well, it seems the great fix for anything these days is a can of paint.  Practically anything can be painted.  But the big question is:  Are there just some things that you shouldn't paint?  (Aside from an expensive antique with beautiful wood.)  Is there such a thing as too much?

I'm finding myself looking at everything around the house with a painter's eye.  This week the soap dispenser ended up being in my painting cross hairs.  I use Dawn Foam multiple times a day so I leave it out on the sink edge.  The container is a pretty blue but doesn't quite go with the decor in my kitchen.  (That is not really too big of a deal but I wanted to paint it anyway.)

I tried painting the bottom half first just to see if it would work.  I didn't have paint specifically formulated for plastic on hand so I used a regular spray primer by Krylon first.  After it was dry I used a shiny silver spray paint also by Krylon.  I didn't remove the labels before hand and kept the soap in the dispenser the whole time--just covered the top with tape.  I like how it turned out.  The paint finish is smooth and has held up well with a couple of washings.  My next step is to paint the rest of the pump and maybe add a flower on the front to fancy it up.

I looked on Pinterest and found a few other soap dispenser makeovers.  Allison from House of Hepworths went the sophisticated route with her design by adding her family's initial to the front of the dispenser.  Kierste from Brown Paper Packages decorated soap dispensers for various holidays.  (Great gift idea.)

Another item that fell victim to the paint can was our sofa table.  It was just a basic brown that needed a little jazzing up.  (In my opinion...)  So the baskets went to Goodwill while the table was hauled outside to my workshop (plastic tablecloth held down by bricks on my back patio).  I lightly sanded the whole table and then primed it with my favorite primer by Kilz.  The next step was to spray paint it with Krylon Pewter.

It ended up being a much lighter color than I was expecting.  It looked nice on it's own with new hardware but not so great next to the colors of the sofa and carpet.  (Definitely NOT my favorite.)  It looks as though I'll be painting it again.

So where do you stand on the painting issue?  1) You paint anything and everything that can't run away from you?  2) You are paint phobic and refuse to even walk down the painting aisle at Lowes?  or 3) You are somewhere in between where painting is your friend but not your obsession?

What is the most unusual thing you've painted?

  2. Most unusual.....a brass bed! It was my grandma's and much of the brass was worn off. It was our first bed and our first fight! He wanted to spray paint it inside. I was much wiser and the winner. It was spray painted outside and the neighbor was horrified at what we were doing. We were just married, poor and could not afford to re brass. It looked much nicer than a 1/2 brass bed. I think my sister has the bed now.

  3. Well, I prefer a balance of old/new, painted/chippy, and light/dark in a room. I really like the sofa table painted. Have you considered distressing it to highlight some of it's original darkness to compliment the sofa colour? Maybe it's just a re-do. That I know all about, friend! Much love, Lisa

  4. My husband says I will paint anything that stands still love enough. He lives in fear that I might paint him one day.
This week I have painted a large red platter, a luggage stand, and the top to my dog treat container.
I think the oddest thing I have painted was a pipe that I painted to blend with the bricks on my house.
Next week I will be painting an old necklace, I would love to see you stop by and check it out.
