Union Jack (Pinterest Challenge)

My latest project is a new design on the sofa table complete with a bright color, lots of sanding and a nod across the pond.

Sherry and John from Young House Love are teaming up with Katie from Bower Power to host their winter edition of The Pinterest Challenge to get people to stop pinning and start doing.  (Not affiliated with the Pinterest company.)  The rules?  You just find something from Pinterest that inspires you and create your own version.  Then join Young House Love for a big Pinterest Challenge linky party on Wednesday, March 14th.  Sounds fun, right?   I'm joining the challenge with my sofa table makeover.

My inspiration was Miss Mustard Seed's Union Jack dresser.  No, I'm not British (although I sometimes speak in a fake accent to complete strangers while my children shrink away in embarrassment)  But I love the graphic design of the British flag.

I also like this Union Jack Bunting although it might pose a tricky design challenge.  (4th of July perhaps?)

I started off with a sad, plain little sofa table we've had for years originally from Target.

I sanded and then primed with Kilz spray primer (the best) and used Krylon Pewter Grey spray paint that I already had on hand.  It turned out much lighter than I had anticipated.  More of a light blue than a medium grey.

I thought the table looked okay on it's own (especially with it's new knobs) but didn't exactly jazz me when put back into the living room against the sofa.  (See previous post.)  And since I couldn't really leave it to weather outside I started thinking of other options.  So it ended up staying in the living room for a time while visions of Union Jack swam in my head.

I wanted to do my own twist and not the exact design of the Union Jack so I kept the soft grey and added a salmon pink from a little tester pot of Glidden paint.  I taped off the lines in sequence and added the layers of paint.  When it was dry I sanded it really well until it looked quite worn in places.  (It looks much darker in the photos than it actually is.)

I changed the knobs out into a mirror faceted trio that adds a little sparkle to the worn finish. I had all the supplies already on hand and used paint remnants from other projects to complete this table so I didn't have to buy anything.   I like how the finished design is an altered version of the popular Union Jack and not an exact replica.

Anyone for some tea and crumpets?

Have you ever been inspired to create something after seeing a great idea on Pinterest?

  4. Ohmigosh, gorgeous!

I actually have the end table version of that exact same table from Target (it's in the garage right now, accumulating dust.) I've always thought about swapping out the legs for taller ones (it's crazy short), but you've given me hope that it can someday be not just more functional but actually pretty!

  7. I love your take on the Union Jack :-) The table looked great painted grey, but the Union Jack really kicks it up a notch - or two or three! There's just something about the UJ that's so appealing.

  12. This turned out amazingly! I'll certainly come over for tea and crumpets! Mostly because I've never had a crumpet. :-)

Great job, and thanks for linking up with the Winter Pinterest Challenge!

  13. This is fate! I have that same exact side table from Target and have been wanting to replace it with something a little more vintage/shabby chic. I considered painting it but was worried it would just look like a piece of painted Target furniture. NOT. THE. CASE. This looks amazing and I am definitely going to paint mine. Thanks for the inspiration!!
