Vintage Flower Pins

I have a few vintage flower pins (or brooches) that have been collected, inherited or received as a gifts. (Thanks, Elizabeth!)   I needed a way to display them and wanted to use some sort of frame but just hadn't been able to find the right fabric to go along with it.  When I saw the beautiful Spring mantel that Kristen put together on her blog, Sophia's, I knew that I wanted to borrow her idea of using sheet moss for a specimen frame.

I started by gathering up all the flower pins I wanted to use.

Next, I found an 8X10 inch ornate picture frame from my stash.  (You may have noticed that the two frames in the post are different.  I documented the whole craft process by photo the first time around and then proceeded to accidentally delete some of the photos from my camera.  (Doh!)  Instead of taking the whole thing apart and redoing it for the picture, I grabbed a similar frame to show the steps.)  The frame had already been spray painted with Krylon Gloss White and distressed for a previous project.

I purchased this sheet moss from Hobby Lobby.  (I would recommend using a coupon if you can as I found it to be a little pricey.)

I spread the sheet moss out over the back of the frame and then trimmed and taped it in place with the multi-useful duct tape.  (Craft Alert:  The moss can be very messy.)

I then arranged the flowers in the pattern I wanted and began to gently pin them in place on the sheet moss.

I decided to add another flower pin to balance the visual a little better.

I added a little "Welcome" sign that I may or may not keep and scattered a couple of pinwheels at the base.  A specimen frame with vintage flower pins on it is a little unexpected but it's growing on me.

Which collection do you own that would look great on a specimen frame?

  1. So cute! Love your flower pins...this turned out so beautiful! Yes, isn't that moss messy...it's worth it though and good idea recommending the coupon. Luckily, I had a Michael's one on-hand. Who knew moss would cost so much?

That's a great idea using duct tape instead of spray adhesive too!

  2. That is just adorable! I live in the woods, and have been trying to think of a good craft for the abundance of moss that we have!

The colors of your pins against the moss are so pretty. I am jealous of your collection, sassy!
