What About the Chairs?

My kitchen table has received much use and abuse over the years.  We bought it back when we only had two little ones.  I didn't care for the style or color but we wanted something that was extremely durable and kid proof.  Now that all four of the children are old enough to refrain from scribbling on the table with markers or carving their name onto the top with a fork I thought it was finally time for a little table makeover.

Here is a before shot of the table.  (Love that golden wood color that clashes with everything else in my home.)  Since this photo, I have replaced the chandelier with my grandma's crystal chandelier, replaced the metal piece with ornate frames and exchanged the two end chairs for a pair of Craig's List finds.

I thought of painting the tops of the chairs with white paint and the legs with Behr Southern Breeze.  (The same color on the kitchen wall.)  I then went on Pinterest to see if anyone else had pinned a picture of something similar.  I found these white painted chairs above with pink legs.  Loved how they turned out so I decided to go forward with my two toned plan.

I started doing two chairs at a time.  Sanding every square millimeter by hand was quite time consuming.  I really wanted the paint to adhere well so I made sure that all the shellac was sanded off.

I then primed them with Kilz spray paint and sanded again.  I used Krylon gloss in white as the paint color and sanded in between the three coats.  Whew!  By the end of the night, my hands had been reduced to nothing more than gnarly looking claws.   (So attractive.  Maybe I can take a second career as a hand model.)

I love the chairs.  The finish is as smooth and soft as a baby's tushy.  Unfortunately, that's as far as I got.  The chairs are patiently waiting for their painted legs.  I also have the other two chairs to do as well as the table.  Little by little.  This has just ended up being a more time consuming project when I'm trying to work it into all the other things going on in this crazy house.

So what about you?  Have you had a project that just kept going on and on?

    1. Laura, you crack me up! I actually bought a number of Santa tablecloths last year after Christmas. The vinyl tops are perfect to paint on--especially indoors.
